DIGITAL MEDIA USED BY EFL LEARNER FOR EXTENSIVE READING (Media Digital Digunakan oleh Siswa Pembelajar Bahasa Inggris untuk Membaca Ekstensif)

Abstract

This article presents a case study about the effect of using digital media for extensive reading for EFL learners in learning English. Therefore, the research problem was "How does extensive digital reading help learners learn English?". All the data of this research were obtained through interview guide and observation. The findings showed that digital media in extensive reading helps EFL learners learn English and significantly helped learners who had no interest in reading academic books. The next was the strategies used; the results showed that both participants tended to use effective strategies and applied aspects of compensation strategies, guessing the meaning based on the context. In addition, the results revealed the common problems faced by extensive readers in digital media, such as visual fatigue and feeling dizzy problems in the long duration of digital reading activity. To solve these problems, the participants usually switched the activity during reading or multitasking. The next was the unknown word problems when reading in extensive reading. As a result, the participants tended to read texts which had familiar topics for them because unfamiliar words problems could be solved by having background knowledge about the topics.

 

Abstrak

Artikel ini menyajikan studi kasus tentang dampak atau pengaruh media digital untuk pembacaan ekstensif bagi siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu, masalah penelitian adalah "bagaimana pengaruh media digital untuk membaca ekstensif membantu siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris". Semua data penelitian diperoleh melalui panduan wawancara dan catatan observasi lapangan. Pada temuannya menunjukkan bahwa media digital dalam pembacaan ekstensif membantu para pelajar EFL dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, terutama bagi pelajar yang tidak tertarik membaca buku akademik. Berikutnya adalah strategi yang digunakan, hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kedua partisipan cenderung menggunakan strategi afektif dan juga menerapkan aspek strategi kompensasi, salah satu aspek dari strategi kompensasi adalah menebak makna berdasarkan konteksnya. Selanjutnya, hasil penelitian ini juga mengungkapkan masalah umum yang dihadapi oleh pembaca luas di media digital. Yang pertama adalah masalah kelelahan visual dan masalah perasaan pusing dalam durasi panjang aktivitas membaca digital. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini para peserta biasanya beralih aktivitas saat membaca atau melakukan multitasking. Berikutnya adalah masalah kata yang tidak diketahui ketika membaca dalam bacaan luas. Sebagai hasil dari penelitian ini, para peserta cenderung membaca teks-teks yang memiliki topik-topik yang akrab bagi mereka, karena masalah kata yang tidak diketahui dapat dipecahkan dengan memiliki latar belakang pengetahuan tentang topik.
