Abstract

This study examines the importance of integrating cultural elements into digital learning materials to enhance student engagement, comprehension, and motivation across diverse backgrounds. The primary objective is to explore students’ perceptions of the Indonesian Language course and their relationship with the need for culturally responsive digital teaching materials. Employing a quantitative correlational research design, data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 469 students from 40 study programs across 16 higher education institutions in Indonesia, selected through random sampling. The instrument used had been validated for both reliability and validity. The findings indicate that, overall, students’ perceptions of the Indonesian Language course fall into the “very positive” category. Moreover, these perceptions significantly correlate with the demand for culturally responsive learning materials. Data were analysed using Kendall’s tau-b and Spearman’s rho correlation techniques, yielding coefficients of 0.672 and 0.794, respectively. These results demonstrate a significant positive relationship between students’ perceptions and their need for culturally relevant digital materials. In other words, the more positive students' views of the Indonesian Language course, the greater their need for engaging learning resources that incorporate cultural elements.
